Fiat Urban Cross Hatchback First Drive Review

Fiat Urban Cross Overview

Fiat Urban Cross is a facelift version of the Fiat Avventura, which is already famous for its high reliability and versatility. The Urban Cross is available in three variants, the Emotion variant with a petrol engine, and the Active and Dynamic variants with a diesel engine. The Fiat Urban Cross features introduced in each model include the cockpit-style dual-tone interior with an optional designer package. The equipment list includes five-inch touch screen navigation system, steering-mounted controls and Bluetooth connectivity. The new radiator grille, 16” alloy wheels, distinctive body side cladding and the glossy metallic colour options have been introduced as standard.

Fiat Urban Cross Look

The Fiat Urban Cross is quite a looker, just like the Avventura. The front has the typical familiar place and the new grille adds a lot of flair to the styling. The headlamps look catchy too. The side profile looks classy and the black cladding adds a touch of ruggedness to the car. The petrol variant comes with Scorpion alloys while the diesel trim gets diamond cut wheels. The derriere looks clean and the omission of the spare wheel on the boot has chopped off some inches from the car’s length. Both the bumpers look tough and the cladding is carried over to them. The petrol variant comes with “Powered By Abarth” written on the rear doors and it looks awesome. The Urban Cross also comes with meaty 16-inch tyres and all in all, the car really boasts of nice road presence.

Fiat Urban Cross Comfort

Fiat Urban Cross interior features the newly-introduced cockpit design with a trendy dual-tone scheme and ambient lighting. The infotainment system with 5” touch screen navigation system, steering-mounted controls, Bluetooth connectivity, ambient lighting and a dual-tone interior with the designer package are available as options. The comfort of the occupants is enhanced with ergonomic design seats with perfect cushioning effect and lumbar support, and rear AC vents for effective cooling breeze at the rear seat. Fiat Urban Cross Gearbox

The Urban Cross is equipped with the familiar 93hp Multi-jet diesel and the hot and exciting Abarth-tuned 142hp turbo-petrol engine. The diesel motor is clearly showing its age and is far from the benchmark it once was. It’s not as refined as the competition and performance too is below par. Turbo lag is the biggest drawback of this engine. It’s very sluggish at low revs and you have to shift down every time the tacho needle drops below 2,000rpm. The engine redeems itself with a strong mid-range, and it’s quite free revving too. So if you stay above 2,000rpm you can ride a healthy wave of torque without having to constantly change gears and that’s just as well as the gearbox slow to shift and has a very rubbery feel.

The Abarth petrol engine on the other hand sets the performance benchmark. The turbo petrol offers seriously strong performance and puts the car in the sub-10sec club for the sprint to 100kph – we managed 9.82sec. Just don’t expect a great mileage figure. There is a tiny amount of lag low down, but power builds up from 1,700 rpm and keeps going all the way until 6,000rpm. This is a car that urges you to be bad! With ample power on tap and a suspension that scoffs at anything the road throws at you, it’s only common sense and the law that will compel you to slow down.

Fiat Urban Cross Riding

The torque tends to overwhelm traction at the front on full bore acceleration runs, (accentuated by the raised ground clearance) resulting in lots of torque steer. But if you feed in the power gradually, it is a very satisfying drive. Despite the increased ground clearance of 205mm and the associated roll, the Urban Cross is still one of the grippiest hatchbacks around. The plus side is that with the higher ground clearance over the Abarth Punto, the Urban Cross is much easier to drive through pothole-filled roads of the city and over steep speed breakers. Fiat Urban Cross Safety

The Fiat Urban Cross braking system features ventilated disc at the front and drums brakes at the rear in the diesel version, and disc brakes at all wheels in the petrol version. The braking efficiency is further improved with anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution for effective control over wet and slippery surfaces. The safety features in the 1.4 L T-Jet Petrol variant include automatic door lock and driver side airbag with early crash sensors for quick opening of the airbags. The Fiat Urban Cross Diesel version does not have the airbag safety feature.

Fiat Urban Cross Bottomline

The Fiat Urban Cross is a nice car with some negatives but it remains to be seen whether the market will accept it or not. The Avventura turned out to be a dismal performer so the Urban Cross isn’t going to be much different. Also, the fact that you get properly loaded premium hatchbacks and compact sedans for this price means that buyers would definitely want to look elsewhere since they love cross shopping. The Urban Cross is similar to the Avventura and due to the omission of the boot-mounted spare wheel, it is far more practical in the city and is even considerably cheaper.
